I was saw something today at World Internet Summit Gold Coast, that made me consider how important presentation at an offline conference is.

Let’s talk hypothetically – what would you think if you saw a person handing out business cards, that had a ‘generic’ gmail account, a vague title and only a website. This person was introducing themselves as an ‘online business’ coach and were ‘soliciting’ business from participants.

The business coach portrays themselves as an expert who could get your product online, marketing and packaging and everything else around that.

There really is no problem with talking to people about business and what you do… but consider the following:

The business coach does not have any brochures – to address the lack, they have a hand written note on the ‘JV Table’ with hand written tear offs.

The business coach is apologizing because they run out of business cards – even though they have only been there for 1 day out of 3…

A quick visit to the website they refer you to, shows a very poorly formatted site that fails to inspire.

To me, this really isn’t a great a great picture – and fails to engender the image that they can really help you.

Let’s have a look at what this coach is offering. Essentially, they are saying that they could get your product online and sold.

Now consider the following:

  • They aren’t organized enough to have a brochure printed (easily enough to knock something up and have it printed at Officeworks – I managed to),
  • They don’t have sufficient business cards available; and
  • Most importantly have a professionally presented website – even though they are offering to market your products online!

I ask you – if you’re looking to work with a marketer – would you work with someone who couldn’t get themselves organized enough to attend an offline event with sufficient paraphernalia to present themselves in a professional manner?

Just prior to leaving for the Summit, I spoke with Connie from Stretch Your Mind And Body about the importance of offline events and the do’s and don’ts of seminar attending. Listen to the show below:
